K9 Belt-Mounted Lead Retention System

Temporary Hands-Free Lead Retention
There are times when a K9 handler needs both hands available without immediately disconnecting from the dog.
The LOF K9 GunFighter Lead Release allows the handler to temporarily secure almost any dog lead directly to a duty belt. Once the lead is connected to the powder-coated steel snap shackle, the handler can use both hands to complete another task while the dog remains attached to their equipment. When it is time to release the lead, a low-profile webbing tab allows the shackle to be opened with one hand, even while the device is under tension.

A Secure Connection to Your Duty Belt
The GunFighter Lead Release is constructed with a fixed loop of 2-inch MIL-SPEC webbing that threads directly onto a 1.5-inch or 2-inch duty belt.
There is no Velcro opening, snap closure or removable belt flap.
This is intentional.
A temporary lead-retention system may be subjected to sudden force if the dog pulls or lunges. The continuous sewn webbing loop removes the possibility of a hook-and-loop belt closure separating under tension. The GunFighter Lead Release becomes a fixed part of the belt setup and remains securely positioned until the duty belt is removed and the product is deliberately taken off.
The system is typically mounted on the opposite side from the handler’s holstered firearm, although final placement should be based on the individual belt configuration and operating requirements.

One-Handed Release Under Load
Unlike many buckles and attachment systems, the snap shackle can be manually released while tension is being applied through the lead.
The handler pulls the integrated webbing release tab to open the shackle and disconnect the lead. This can be completed with one hand without having to remove the product from the duty belt or relieve all tension from the connection first.
This is particularly useful when the dog needs to be released promptly but the lead is already pulling against the retention system.
The GunFighter Lead Release is a manually operated system. It is not a force-activated breakaway and will not intentionally release simply because the dog pulls against it. The shackle can also be closed with one hand by pressing the clevis into the spring-loaded retaining pin, without needing to pull the release tab.

Low-Profile, Loop-Free Release Tab
The release tab is made from stitched webbing and intentionally does not include a finger loop.
A large loop could catch on equipment, door handles, fencing, vegetation or other objects in the surrounding environment. The low-profile tab gives the handler enough material to locate and operate the release while reducing unnecessary snag points. Its contrasting shape also makes the release easy to identify by touch once the handler is familiar with its position on the belt.
Each GunFighter Lead Release is sewn in-house by the LOF Defence production team.
The fixed belt loop, shackle connection and release tab are assembled as a complete system rather than being attached through a removable belt flap. Careful stitch placement and reinforcement help keep the webbing components secure while maintaining a compact profile on the duty belt.
The result is a straightforward piece of equipment with no unnecessary closures or complicated adjustments.

Works with Almost Any K9 Lead
The snap shackle can accept the handle or attachment loop found on most conventional dog leads.
There is no proprietary lead required, allowing the GunFighter Lead Release to be used with a wide range of patrol, training and general-purpose K9 leads.
To attach the lead:
Open the snap shackle.
Place the lead handle or compatible loop inside the shackle.
Press the hinged arm against the retaining pin until it closes.
Confirm the shackle is fully seated before relying on the connection.
Pull the webbing release tab when the lead needs to be disconnected.
Always inspect the lead, shackle and webbing before use.
The snap shackle can also be used to temporarily carry compatible equipment with a suitable loop or attachment point.
Patrol gloves, search gloves and similar items can be clipped into the shackle to keep them accessible without filling a pocket or pouch. The same one-handed release allows the carried item to be removed quickly when required. The product should only be used with items that can be safely carried from the duty belt without creating an entanglement or snag hazard.
Intended for Temporary Handler-Controlled Retention
The GunFighter Lead Release is intended to temporarily secure a dog’s lead to a handler-worn duty belt while the handler remains present and in control of the situation.
It is not intended for:
Unattended tethering
Tying a dog to a fixed object
Long-term restraint
Tie-outs or kennel use
Leaving a dog connected without direct supervision
Replacing proper lead-handling practices
The handler should remain aware of the dog, the lead and the surrounding environment whenever the system is in use. Sudden force from a powerful dog will be transferred through the lead and into the handler’s belt. The handler must determine whether temporary belt retention is appropriate for the dog, equipment setup and task being performed.
